The Vampires’ music is a unique blend of soulful jazz, old-school reggae, romantic Afro-Peruvian, danceable Afro-Cuban, exotic Balkan and all-out funk-laden Afrobeat.
Described by the UK Guardian as “seductive, genre-hopping creativity,” and US Downbeat magazine as “worldly, talented”, The Vampires features four of Australia’s most awarded jazz instrumentalists, including saxophonist Jeremy Rose, trumpeter Nick Garbett and drummer Alex Masso, with Blue Mountains-based bassist Brett Hirst joining the boys for the Blue Mountains leg of their tour.

The band has released five albums and toured relentlessly around Australia, Europe and the UK. Combining risk-taking improvisation, sophisticated compositions and an uncanny sense of dialogue between the sax-trumpet frontline, the band has developed a style of its own that effortlessly combines influences from all corners of the world. To mark 10 years of performing together, the band collaborated with one of the jazz world’s most talked about guitarists, Lionel Loueke, for their ARIA nominated release ‘The Vampires Meet Lionel Loueke’.

The media has reported that The Vampires Meet Lionel Loueke is a “phenomenal record” (Downbeat, US), “chock full of irrepressible joy, a commodity that is in short supply these days” (All About Jazz, US), and that “this was the perfect summer record that pulled off the trick of being both an ambient soundtrack to life on the move while remaining capable of standing up to concentrated home listening” (All About Jazz, UK).

Following the recent success of his Australian ‘Midnight in Motion’ Tour which saw award winning blues/soul troubadour Shaun Kirk selling out numerous headline shows across the country; the one man dynamo has announced a stack of new tour dates across Australia & New Zealand to launch his soon to be released new single ‘Howlin at the Moon’.

Kirk’s first release in over 3 years will come off the back of what the 29 year old describes as a “quarter-life crisis” ignited by a US Record Deal that fell through in questionable circumstances back in 2015. Determined to overcome his disappointment and grow from it, Kirk has since spent countless hours soul searching and honing his skills as a writer and musician inside his home studio on the outskirts of Melbourne; prevailing with a fresh new sound and groove to carry him into the next phase of his ever evolving career.

Recorded and co-produced with Nick Huggins (Jen Cloher, Fraser A Gorman, Skipping Girl Vinegar) at A Pocket Full of Stones Studios in the sleepy beachside town of Point Lonsdale, Victoria and co-written with ARIA Award Winner Joel Quatermain (Eskimo Joe) – ‘Howlin at the Moon’ is set to drop in early 2018.

Shaun Kirk has an energy that is unique, with a hybrid of musical styles that challenge genre classification, his shows are nothing short of an experience.” – Diesel
“One of the most explosive solo acts this country has to offer.” – Mixdown Magazine
“A truly hot new artist on the blues scene” – Peter Noble (Director of Bluesfest)

One of James‘s major musical influences was friend and mentor, the late Jackie Orszaczky. James performed in a number of Jackie’s groundbreaking bands such as Jump Back Jack, Industrial Accident, The Godmothers, The Orszaczky Budget Orchestra and Hungarian Rapsadists. The CD ‘Wayback’, includes a performance of a traditional Hungarian folk song, Sir az ut elottem with Jackie Orszaczky on piccolo bass and singing. Also, a longstanding member of the Australian Art Orchestra, projects James has played in Sandy Evan’s Testimony – a tribute to Charlie Parker performed at both Sydney and Melbourne Festivals and Ruby’s Story and Kura Tungar: River Songs and Stories – a collaboration with Indigenous performers, the late Ruby Hunter and Archie Roach. Also with the Australian Art Orchestra, James Greening performed in India and featured on the ARIA nominated recording with the Sruthi Laya Ensemble titled Into the Fire andJosh Roseman’s project at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival in 2011. In addition to the groups mentioned above, he recorded and performed live with the late Bernie McGann, Tim Hopkins, Mike Nock, Chris Cody, Steve Hunter, Monica Trapaga, James Morrison and Vince Jones. 26678467 1970158529968892 323550267101178152 o 150x150 - KM Gig Guide

Tuesday Night is generally associated with tucking the children into bed and wishing for the weekend. Well, Music in the Mountains and Mesa Barrio have teamed up to give you a reason to look forward to Tuesday. On the second Tuesday of the month, come along for a scrumptious meal at Mesa Barrio, one of the Mountains’ top eats, and explore a classic album with a live musician. For the opening show, Pat O’Donnell, an Orange (NSW) based artist, will be exploring John Lennon’s second album, ‘Imagine’ (1971).

    The Album:
This album was recorded a year after the Beatles big break-up and was at a time when Lennon and former bandmate Paul McCartney were estranged following a very public court case. Imagine is Lennon’s call for peace in the world during a chaotic time in his life with some commentary on the political climate of the time. This is a truly classic album and a wonderful way to start a monthly music series!

    The Venue:
Mesa Barrio has firm roots in Catalonian alleyways, Greek tavernas and Italian enoteche. Head Chef, Will Cowan–Lunn has created a dynamic menu formulated through traditional Mediterranean influence and modern technique. Will’s impressive resume includes a Head Chef position at Rockpool Bar and Grill, Melbourne, as well as many hatted restaurants throughout Sydney. The menu at Mesa Barrio emphasizes local produce, most notably, vegetables from Blue Mountains producers First Farm Organics, Epicurean Harvest and fresh fruit and vegetables picked up daily by Vegie Patch in Blackheath. The seafood arrives fresh daily from Fish and Fowl and all meats are free-range from Deli Ham and Crack Willow Farm. The bar has an ever-evolving wine list, representing some of our favourite local producers from the Central Ranges, as well as other great Australian and international vignerons. Also featured are local and international small batch liquor producers, with a strong focus on providing well-crafted cocktails, to match the quality of food. Our ambient space is always filled with good music and lends itself to larger groups. A communal concrete table runs down one side of the restaurant, highlighting the restaurant’s motivation and philosophy, that all food and wine is best shared with friends and familia.

Sydney based singer-songwriter Jack Nolan falls well under the category of an Australian storyteller, and for years since has written and performed songs in and around the Australian music scene. Jacks writing & playing conjures up images of the Australian story honouring Americana sounds of great artists of the world. Career highlights include his role as main writer and lead singer of the Kelly Gang, formed with Divinyls/Gurus bassist Rick Grossman, and joined on stage and in the studio with members of Midnight Oil, the subsequent album “Looking for the Sun’ considered a hidden gem. Other transitional works like his solo album ‘That’s the Sea’ and the EP ‘Lost Property – Outakes & Demos’ hint at his latest journey into American country roots, with more acoustic instruments carrying the stories. So to 2018, now begins a defining era in Jacks career, with his batch of new songs having piqued the interest of Nashville native Mike Poole, he’ll head over in April to finish his record, bringing to life the raw melodies and new stories he’s performing now.

Join Jack Nolan for his Hotel Blue debut this Saturday Night, 6:30-8:30 pm. Come along early if you want a seat as it’s first come, first served. Bar & Kitchen open, family-friendly, free event. Live music @ Hotel Blue is brought to you by ‘Music in the Mountains’.
