We at Katoomba Music are Tokai fans and love the whole Tokai story of guitar building in Japan and now also China. It has been a while since Tokai has sold any acoustics in Australia, but they are back in the country and with an Australian twist! They have pick ups developed by legendary guitar innovator Brad Cole, a founder of Australian guitar company Cole Clark, called the Supernatural pickup system.
Brad Clark’s Supernatural pickup system was developed to overcome the limitations of traditional analogue pickup systems, and create a pickup that accurately reproduces the tonal complexity of acoustic guitars – resulting in an amplified tone so natural, it’s supernatural.
Unlike traditional single piezo pickup systems, the Supernatural pickup utilises six large cylindrical piezos mounted under the bridge plate, allowing the guitars individual “woody” tonal characteristics to be accurately reproduced. Each Supernatural pickup is tuned using specialty EQ filters which take into account the guitars body shape, timbers and finish, resulting in four unique “soundscapes” which users can scroll between with a click of a button.
In addition to the pre-programmed soundscapes, Brad Cole’s Supernatural pickups feature four independent sliders, each slider providing users with control over a section of the analogue 3-Band graphic EQ (bass, mid-range and top end), and master volume.
The pickup, including battery and EQ settings, are located entirely in the sound hole. The battery sits inside at the back of the guitar body, while the EQ settings reside conveniently at the side of the sound hole – out of sight, but not out of reach!
You may be worried that you have to remove the strings every time you need to change the battery…but you certainly do not! The Terra Nova comes with a gadget which you funnel in between the strings to collect and seamlessly retrieve the battery. It is really simple. And provides the perk of a stunning Koa Solid body uninterrupted by the artificial aesthetic of an exterior pickup.
Cole Clark guitars are known to “plug in great”. The quality of their amplified sound secures loyal fans, and a Bradley Clark pickup in a beautiful Tokai design could win your loyalty too!
